NHS Blood Pressure Check Service in Chalfont St Giles
Sparks Pharmacy provides the NHS Blood Pressure Check Service to help identify people who may have high blood pressure but have not yet been diagnosed.
The service includes an initial clinic blood pressure check and, where clinically indicated, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). ABPM records blood pressure over a longer period and can provide useful information for a person’s GP when considering whether hypertension may be present.

Who is the NHS service for?
Under the current NHS service specification, clinic checks are primarily intended for adults aged 40 years and over who do not already have a diagnosis of hypertension and who have not had their blood pressure checked within the relevant service timeframe. Other eligible patients may also be referred or identified in line with the national specification.
People who are already being treated for hypertension are not normally eligible for an NHS clinic check under this case-finding service. If you already have high blood pressure and need monitoring, speak to our team and we can explain what other options may be available.
What happens during the check?
- Clinic blood pressure reading: your blood pressure is measured in the pharmacy following the NHS process.
- Assessment: the result is reviewed to decide whether any further action is needed.
- ABPM where indicated: if appropriate, you may be offered ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
- Results and next steps: relevant results are shared with your GP practice so they can consider whether further assessment or treatment is required.
What is ABPM?
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring uses a portable blood pressure monitor that takes readings over a period of time while you go about normal daily activities. This can help provide a more representative picture than a single reading taken in the pharmacy.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment?
Availability depends on pharmacist capacity and whether ABPM equipment is available, so contacting the pharmacy first is recommended.
What if my blood pressure is very high?
The pharmacy team will follow the NHS pathway and advise you on the appropriate next step. Some results may require urgent medical assessment rather than routine follow-up.
Will the pharmacy diagnose high blood pressure?
No. The service is designed to identify possible hypertension and provide measurements that can support further assessment. A diagnosis and any treatment decision are made through the appropriate clinical pathway.
