What can Pharmacy First help with?
The NHS Pharmacy First clinical pathways cover seven common conditions, with age and clinical eligibility requirements applying:
- Sinusitis
- Sore throat
- Earache / acute otitis media
- Infected insect bites
- Impetigo
- Shingles
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infection in women
The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and medical history and decide the most appropriate next step. This may include self-care advice, NHS-funded treatment where the pathway allows and it is clinically appropriate, or referral to another NHS service.
Do I need a GP referral?
For the seven Pharmacy First clinical pathways, patients can usually present directly to a participating pharmacy as well as being referred by NHS 111, a GP practice or another authorised healthcare provider. Other elements of Pharmacy First may require an electronic referral.
What happens during the consultation?
A pharmacist will ask about your symptoms, relevant medical history and medicines, and may need to carry out an examination depending on the condition. The consultation is intended to identify whether you meet the NHS clinical pathway and whether pharmacy treatment is appropriate.
If your symptoms fall outside the service criteria or there are warning signs that need further assessment, we will explain what to do next and signpost or refer you to the appropriate service.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pharmacy First an NHS service?
Yes. Pharmacy First is an NHS community pharmacy service. NHS-funded treatment may be supplied where the relevant clinical pathway and eligibility criteria are met.
Will I always receive medicine?
No. Treatment depends on the pharmacist’s clinical assessment. Advice, self-care or referral may be more appropriate, and antibiotics or other medicines are not automatically supplied.
Can I just walk in?
Patients can present directly for the seven clinical pathways. Availability can depend on pharmacist capacity, so contacting the pharmacy first can be helpful at busy times.
